Arnold Starr, the father of #auditory #neuropathy and founding chair of #neurology at #UCI, peacefully passed away on July 2, 2023, at the age of 91. I had the privilege of being his colleague and friend for more than three decades. Here is a short list of his notable achievements:
– He discovered auditory neuropathy, a condition that affects 10-20% of individuals with #hearingloss.
– He recorded the first electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses (#ABR).
– He found that brain-dead individuals still respond to sounds.
– He demonstrated that long latency brain potentials can serve as biomarkers for #dementia and #alcohol intoxication.
I captured this picture of him a few years ago at his house. Arne, thank you, and may you rest in peace.
